Spring Cleanse 3 Day Juice Fast with Juice Recipes

Hey Spring time Lovelies!

Spring has finally arrived!
I know it supposedly came a little while back but Québec was pelted with major snow storms and hard winter weather, only these past few days have we had rain and the remnants of old man winter are finally gone away; and warmer weather is forecasted.

Spring time is one of two times in the year when people do some form of a detox/cleanse, for health purposes. The second time is in fall but we will leave that for another day. I am blessed to have 4 consecutive days off of work and am taking full advantage of them, I felt a short juice fast would be wonderful and thought that some of you might be interested too. Curious as to why it can be of benefit? Check out this awesome list, courtesy of:

So, for this weeks post, I am including: juices, loads of recipes and juicing guidelines. The reason for all this is because if you decide you want to try it out, I want you to be prepared mentally, grocery list and purchase wise, as well as familiarizing yourself with what you will be making for juice fast days.
It's not stressful, it's empowering and fun.
Plus, you get to choose your juices based on what you like, what your budget allows, what works with any fruits/vegetables you already have, and be able to avoid any allergies or intolerance's to certain fruits/veg.
I know you are wondering what happens with the days after the three days of juicing are done, well, there is an info-graphic below that explains how to come off your juice fast, what to eat to help in coming off a fast & the dangers of doing it wrong. I will be doing a post with some menu options for you so you can guide yourself back to eating normally but that's not today. For now, just focus on the juice fast & keep checking back here for deelish noms my lovies!

This blog series is my journey that I have chosen to share and include others in, you are not required to do anything that you know will not work for you, goes against recommendations you have received, or that you deem is not safe.

Moving forward...

Juicing and fasting are opportunities for several levels of health, obviously there are benefits with regards to physical health but you may be surprised to discover the positive impact it can have on your mental, emotional, and spiritual health. It can be quite intense and liberating, there are always unpleasant moments but serious long-term illness is way more unpleasant than anything juice fasting has ever sent my way.
Before I get started on recipes, we need to go over some important information.

1) I need you to stick to the juicing rules:

-Sweeter juices first thing in the morning & as a snack in the earlier part of the afternoon.

-Juices for daily consumption with food should max at 2-3/day.

-Juices for juice fasts are usually 6-10/ juices per day

-You MUST drink green and more savoury juices to help your cells be nourished, detox, and regenerate. You are also making sure not to over feed bad bacteria by sticking to more green based drink's. It is alright to have an apple or a pear in a more vegetable based juice to cut some strong or bitter taste.

2) Drink when hungry and do not drink less because you want to lose weight. These juices are your sustenance, do not be left shaky, irritable, or starved because of foolishness. Drink up!

-Enjoy water and tea.

-Wrap up in a warm blanket when you need, as your body temperature will drop; it is normal. Do not worry, just rest and bundle.

3) Go to the bathroom as often as you need, don't force just flow.

4) DO NOT watch shows with food or read books or magazines laden with food images. Torturing yourself is cruel, be kind and remember that food cravings=drink juice and water as needed.

-Cravings even after drinking juice are normal, breathe, wait ten minutes, keep yourself busy with simple pleasant things and it shall pass.

5) Remind any loved one's that are home with you of what you are undertaking, how important their support is, not to sabotage your efforts, and apologize in advance with warnings about potential crankiness and even crying jags. Yes, juicing detox can get very emotional, remember to be kind to yourself.

6) If doing colonic irrigation or enema's, you MUST take probiotics within an hour of having one because these remove all bacteria, good & bad. You need to put plenty of good bacteria back in.

7) If you are on medication's that your health provider/Naturopath says you need, keep taking them! You are responsible for speaking with a health provider before embarking on this journey. I continued taking my thyroid natural meds and supplements during my juice fasts, it is important.

8) How you prepare for a cleanse is of utmost importance as how you end one. Here is a link to prepping for a juice fast/cleanse. I prefer to give you a few blog posts to refer to, as information overload is of no help to anyone. Coming off a fast link is below this post:

Good to know:

Are You Making These Common Juicing Mistakes:

How and when to get ready is really important. I buy my fruits and vegetables along with water and supplements, the 1-3 days before I start my cleanse. I don't like having to do energy draining tasks the first 48 hours of juicing; and shopping is energy draining. The first 24 hours my body is adjusting to going without food and I have been known to experience mild headaches, feeling more tired than usual, and running to the bathroom for a lot of numbers 1 & 2. This is normal, it's another reason I like to stick close to home, do very gentle stretching or a short walk, (remember to not be too far from a washroom) and lots of water, juices, hot detox tea's, and rest, as I need it. Don't fight the urges to rest, it's good for you.

I have even been known to tell people that I will be away for 3-4 days and won't be bringing my cel or any electronics, as I am away on a health retreat.
I don't care if it's not 100% truthful, I care about my health & creating an opportunity to succeed at what I am doing.
Juice/liquid fasts are serious business & they are not to be entered willy nilly, without proper prep, or without true commitment.
I am giving you 3 days to do this, I like doing 7 days when time and finances allow but a solid three days is great for a seasonal boost.
I also do colonic irrigation, as it helps with elimination, eases detox symptoms-which are worse for eczema or psoriasis sufferers, and it cuts the headaches big time!
                       Clean Your Colon For more information-->http://shuddhcoloncare.com/ ‪#‎coloncleansing‬ ‪#‎Health‬ ‪#‎Fitness‬:
It's not for everyone & I am not judging those who don't want to do this. I am only giving it as a recommendation, I used to get them done professionally, then I studied colonic irrigation, and now I do them at home with an enema kit I bought at the pharmacy.
                             Www.nashvillecoloncleansecolonic.com:
I know some of you might not like this topic but it's important to know about. My first liquid detox was a thousand times worse than it had to be, and it was all because I detoxes too much, too quickly, and my skin suffered horribly for it. I have never had an eczema flare like that before and it would have been completely avoided, if I had known about colonic irrigation. It was a Naturopath, a client, and a Rabbi, who taught me about detox and the importance of elimination in the colon. I am including a link to a video from YouTube that shows you how to do a home colonic safely. This is something you should discuss with a health provider before attempting, especially if you have a medical condition.

BTW, I DO NOT recommend coffee enema's or anything other than a water enema/colonic. That's my personal and professional opinion. Also, enema's and colonic's are not an every day thing, they are for use during cleanses or as a medical professional suggests. People get hooked on these types of methods because they result in rapid weight loss, however, our bodies have a very efficient, effective, and properly constructed method of expelling waste. Irrigating the colon is only needed for specific reason's and for short periods of time.
If you are not comfortable performing a home enema, by all means go to a professional. Just research, check qualifications, and reviews before hand. Personally, when I juice fast, a colonic every day is a necessity.
I would also like to suggest that you clean your home and especially your bathroom, really well, before your fast begins. You will not have the energy to do these things and you will feel much better attempting this in a clean and sanitary environment.

The benefits of colonic irrigation:

Colon Hydrotherapy Benefits | Scottsdale Colon Hydrotherapy:

I also highly recommend that you do not change or stop taking medication that your doctor has prescribed you, while cleansing. You must consult your health provider before beginning any detox program and juicing is no different. Try to seek out a Naturopath who will listen to you and knows about juicing. My family doctor was big on natural alternative's and had no qualms about my juicing but I did stick to taking my probiotics, my thyroid meds, and I slowed down on days I needed to. I also drink loads of spring water and detox water when juice fasting.

I am going to focus on those of you with adrenal, thyroid, and autoimmune issues for a moment.
Juicing is a great way to kick start a sluggish metabolism, support the body's natural desire for health, to detox, and turn over a new healthy leaf. However, if you struggle with the above mentioned issues, you need to be aware of some important things.

1-Take it easy on goitrogenic foods that could worsen your thyroid's functionality. Here is an info-graphic on goitrogens:

Goitrogens are naturally occurring anti-nutrients in certain foods that interfere with the production of thyroid hormones...Cooking has been shown to effectively remove goitrogenic compounds. People with thyroid issues commonly have food sensitivities. All processed and man-made foods need to be avoided at all costs. Other common sensitivities include those of the nightshade family such as eggplant, tomatoes, & potatoes.:

I personally do not have a problem with almonds, flax, pumpkin seeds or figs. I eat from the above listed foods sparingly and usually have them cooked when I can.

I incorporate a bit of cabbage, peaches, strawberries, and pears when juicing but it's about 2 juices over my whole juice fast. I know my body, I listen to what it's telling me on any given day, I am aware that on some days my thyroid is not operating well and I respect what my body needs & doesn't need.

2-I have incorporated bone broth on liquid fasts when my thyroid was particularly bad and my body was in autoimmune response over drive. I am including links to my bone broth recipe & Dr. Josh Axe's site, he helped me with a lot of issues that modern medicine, specialist's, tests, and regular doctor's, were just not finding or listening to me about. I would also recommend the Stop The Thyroid Madness blog if you are struggling, all your tests come back as normal but you know something is wrong, and you need help or have question's, that you are not finding or getting answers to,

3-Drink juices that support your thyroid. I always include them in my fasts and they do make a difference.

4-Don't push it! And this applies to everyone doing a juice/liquid cleanse, you cannot expect to be well if you abuse your body, no matter how well nourished it is. I mean it when I say rest, gentle exercises, and kindness to yourself. Self-Love, there is a reason why the word self is first.

5-You may want to keep a 3 day juice journal. The reason why is because some juices may negatively or positively impact your body more than others. I know that when I took a mix of carrots, apples, a beet with a know of ginger and a stalk of celery, that juice made my energy levels sky rocket! I was hyper but super charged and happy. It's good to take notes, so you can refer back to them and decide which juices make you feel the best; this way you can incorporate them in your daily routine, even after the juice fast is done.

6- Drink when you need to, don't deny yourself juice because you think you're having too much. These juices are your source of nutrients, let yourself have them. My first day is usually 6-7 juices and then my second day goes up, along with having warm almond milk and all the other recommended liquids. I feel fine and full.

7- Lastly, I suggest getting some Tulsi tea, I like Pukka Three Tulsi tea. It's a bit pricey but I feel really great when I drink it, it's also known as Holy Basil tea and is purported to have a number of health benefits. I discovered that I feel much better and less sluggish when I drink it, on bad thyroid days. I also drink lemon, ginger, fig-wort detox tea in the morning and just before bed. These support my detox process and ease digestive issues.

Turmeric Morning Inflammation Soother Juice

Yum yum and good for you, I am still recovering from being very sick. I am choosing juices that are healing and energizing, plus praying and being gentle to myself. Try to use organic ingredients for this juice, if you can't it is okay. I used lemon with the ginger and turmeric as a means to ease my digestion, help my metabolism, facilitate absorption, and for taste. This juice was not as sweet because of the lemon and turmeric, the latter of the two is known to be more bitter but bitter foods can be really good for us. They help build bile and in the case of a root like turmeric, it helps fight inflammation. I have a recipe for golden milk I am going to post at a later date which was recommended to me by the owner at the West Indian grocery store I go to, Punjab in Lasalle on Newman. I buy most of my herbs and spices from the Gagjit clan, I love how kind and helpful they are and I grew up with their son, as we went to elementary school together. Mr. Gagjit and I were talking and he mentioned golden milk as a way to battle inflammation, stomach disorders, and it is even used with Cancer patients, to much success. For now though, I am giving you this juice recipe and some simple pics to get started but keep checking back for more awesome recipes!

Fresh ingredients hanging out together and getting to know all about their rooty goodness.

So, as it was early in the morning, and I, like an ass, forgot that Turmeric stains badly and was reminded because I neglected to wear gloves. Now I look like my superpower is turning bright yellow just before work. I can live with it, it has gotten darker now & looks kind of artsy fartsy. Smiling...

Here be the recipe for golden morning wellness. Enjoy!

TURMERIC MORNING INFLAMMATION SOOTHER JUICE:

3 Oranges, peeled
1/4 Lemon peeled
1 Apple
3 Carrots
1 Knob ginger, peeled
1 Piece tumeric, peeled

Run it all through the juicer and drink straight away. Serves 1

It is not recommended to leave this juice for any length of time, as the healing properties of the turmeric are most potent and of best help to your body when imbibed without delay.

Welcome May! 14 Things May Means for Me List

It has arrived, beautiful May.
This spring month is a time where it feels like things are finally coming together, there's loads to do, (well, there's always loads to do since becoming a grown-up) the weather is slowly sliding into summer, buds are poking through, and people seem to be smiling more as winters chill leaves our bones. It is fall, only inverted for me. Fall is when winter prep begins and all the foods and holiday work reflect that; but spring is lighter fare, cleaning/clearing out, getting back to basics, and focusing energy on the simpler things.
It sounds strange perhaps, but I always feel stuck between February and April. It's like there is no forward movement no matter how hard I try. I start going bonkers trying to beat the winter blues, and keep myself as busy as possible with loads of tasks, so I keep from going stir crazy. For anyone complaining that this is a long drawn out spring and that it is cold, allow me to remind you that this was reality just 3 weeks ago.

Yes, we had a snow storm and the snow did vanish quickly but it was a clear reminder that Quebec has a hard time letting go of Old Man Winter.
So all you complainers of cold, please hushies, we do not need a winter wrath reminder. Focus on some of this instead:

As it is May and I feel pretty chipper, I am doing a list of, Things this month means for me.
I like doing these to clear the cobwebs, re-focus my energy, notice the good and wonderful blessings in my life, to remind myself to let go of stress, and to let my geekiness fly!
What's your May list look like?

Things May Means For Me:

1) I get to really look forward to going on beautiful walks out in nature when she's in full bloom!

I am super excited for how good it's going to smell and how calmingly beautiful it is.

2) I am majorly cleaning/organizing & getting rid of the old to make way for the new! From this, clear out my closet clutter:

To this tidy wonder: (and I had several bags I got to give to charity!)

3) My brain starts brimming with new ideas, I realize I must seize the day and ride the wave!

4) I am on a serious homesteading kick and am enjoying all things, food preparedness and survivalist. I am even considering a starting a second blog later this summer about minimalism/homesteading; more on that later.
For now though, let's just say my mason jars and Excalibur dehydrator are getting a good run for their money.

5) I am hoping a special combination of the two in the next picture will be in my immediate future, God willing there will be some very positive things to come.

I took this screenshot of an Instagram feed you should check out, it keeps me going when I am sad, have ants in my pants because I struggle with patience, and when I feel like God has forgotten.

6) Summers blessed bounty is, thank God, soon to be upon us! This means I get to load up on my favouritest foods-fruits & vegetables! Plus I enjoy wandering markets and warm weather picnics, and there be canning in my future. Whoot whoot!

Cool dolphin banana idea with that platter.

I know, waiting for all those delicious things is hard but soon my lovelies, soon...

This canning/cold storage is my dream for homesteading right now. I get a thrill when I look at it. No questions, just feel it.

7) My birthday is coming up and I only make mention of it because it means I get to have something very special, which I only eat once a year.
My favourite ice-cream ever!

Ask Poppa Bear, life isn't the same without it once you have tried the real stuff.

Transitioning Meals for Detox Cleanses & Health Management

Good Morning Delightful One's!

Today we are having a blog post about transitioning foods and why it is important to take a slow but steady approach to dietary/health changes.
Transitioning foods are exactly what they sound like. They are foods that you normally eat which you steadily decrease and change, while making adjustments; which allow one to introduce new foods to assist in paving the way for a complete overhaul.
I chose to write-up this cleanse after Easter as I knew that people would be feasting with family and eating some celebratory meals which are normally higher in fats, sugars, and calories.
Confession time, I am actually a bit ahead of those of you following this cleanse prep, meaning that I started a bit before you did and am doing an extra week. I had to make recipes, take pictures, do posts in advance, make menus, and I was itching to start. I also had a touch of food poisoning recently and ended up eating less than the menus I will provide, required. As well as imbibing loads of broth, and easy on the stomach foods, some days I could not have smoothies but I could have gentle juices and fruits like bananas, and apples cooked down to apple sauce. I obviously had not planned on getting sick but I had planned on doing this cleanse/detox for some time, and I did not want to skip out.
So I started early, ate carefully while sick and have almost caught up-some days food is still a bit too heavy.
This was a perfect time to do these detox adjustments, as it was the 1st transition weeks, where we get all the NO foods out. I could not eat them anyways, and juicing has been a great immune booster. That coupled with loads of probiotics has cut my sickie suffering by half and I have recovered much more quickly. I write this because I want you to feel more at ease with being flexible when the need arises. Work with what you have going on and promise yourself to stick to healthy stuff.

Anywhoodles, I took pictures of my previous week of transitioning meals, you can see how I was very careful with portions. My last cheat type meals were yummy holiday celebration foods, which we ate before Easter. I decided to juice fast for a few days this Easter, so I enjoyed my gravy with potatoes two times and in two different styles. One was poutine-a Québec fav, and the second was turkey with gravy, smashed oven baked potatoes, and veg. Now I have switched my white, starchy, carb-tastic potatoes, for some delectable organic, sweet potatoes.
I think you will notice that regular potatoes are pretty much absent or are in very miniscule amounts on this detox. That's because they are a very high carb starch food; this can cause spikes in glucose, bloating, and lethargy; not to mention stronger cravings for sweets. I allow them here and there but in very small amounts and I prefer them at lunch, steamed or baked. I also choose yellow fleshed potatoes over white one's. The flavour and texture are so much better, especially when steamed. If you have never sliced potatoes and steamed them until fork tender in a bamboo steamer, you don't know what you have been missing. I took a pic that is down below with chard, steamed pots and fish-all was fantastic & will be posted for the coming menu. I was playing with my food on the plate to see if chard could look leggoish.
YES! My inner child lives!
For now, you can scroll through and see the types of food I have been eating and if you see bread of any kind, it is always gluten-free with whole-grain flour, as I have a serious allergy.

Big holiday bang that was still quite healthy. We had herb slathered roast turkey, smashed potatoes, plain sweetpea's, and carrots. I added Irish soda bread and slathered my turkey and pots with homemade turkey gravy-too good!
This was my naughty poutine, with gf gravy.
                          Image result for poutine
The first week is really getting red meat and all the no no foods out, see this post if you missed anything:

Transitioning meals can still include your favourite items with a healthy spin. I use hummus in place of butter or margarine, all natural gluten-free roast chicken cold cuts, and veg to top it off.

Breakfast can be a savoury & sweet affair, this was after my workout.

Meals that have loads of flavour like this Vegan Macrobiotic Soup are perfect for getting your taste buds used to clean and simplified flavours.
The recipe link is here, in case you have not already scoped it out:

We will eventually be switching to a vegan and raw vegan way of eating, the recipe for these filled Nori rolls will make you very happy and leave your tummy full/satisfied. That recipe will be up and coming soon.

There's this wonderful curried vegan channa & aloo dish that is authentic, such a blissful comfort, with a delightful side of snap peas. I like it so much and it is a fabulous intro to sustaining and filling vegetarian meals which put a smile on your face. Recipe for this to come as well so keep checking in.

And the next pic is the fish with veg. Both cooked in the steamer drizzled with extra virgin olive oil and some Herbamare. I served it with a side of pickled onions, this will be posted soon as well. I just like your eyes to get excited and your mouth to drool a bit before you learn how to make these things. I have changed some serious die hard junk food lover's into people who were excited healthy food. I don't want to deprive people, I want to improve their methods of cooking and help them make good choices. Food is such a blessing, make it a gift to your health by choosing wisely.

Pickled onions to go with your meals are something you might like to make now, so they are ready for when you want to eat them. I switch any sweetener in the recipe for honey or maple syrup when I am eating the detox/cleanse way. The recipe link can be found here:

I find they taste great in sandwiches with cold cuts, with turkey or with cheese-that is, when I am allowed to eat cheese. No touchie for now, but it still looks good with all the different colours on a plate.

Don't forget to add Fat flush waters when you are detoxing, they really do make a difference!

And healthy snacks like these rawfood apple pie crackers.

Smoothies, for me, are an important part of transitioning. Especially when we go to vegan and rawfood week, as they help give energy, cut hunger, and have a richness which cuts cravings for fatty bad foods. I make an effort to have at least 1 per day when all poultry and fish are out, they make a big difference in my day; especially when I am training. I found some recipes on Pinterest and decided to post them lower down, this next pic is a coconut pineapple smoothie that will be going up soon.

I want to briefly talk about dairy and why I allow it as a transition food the first week. Dairy has some seriously strong weight gaining properties, i.e: F-A-T! It also causes more mucus formation, allergic reactions, and many of us are intolerant as the human digestive system has not had time to adjust to our intake of so many dairy products.
Historically, we have not always eaten so much dairy. Cow's milk is for baby cows and human milk is for humans, as we discovered other uses for cow's milk our intake steadily increased along with our waistlines. We in North America have a serious problem with moderation and an absolute love affair with dairy.
What is pizza without ooey gooey melted mozzarella? Or a frosty without the milk?
In Japan dairy is consumed sparingly, it is considered a specialty item and much of their super markets have very few options when it comes to cheese and dairy. The reason I mention Japan is because they have the oldest living and healthiest elderly population of anywhere in the world. North Americans who move there report having lost anywhere from 25-65 pounds from eating a healthier diet that steers clear of dairy. Of course there are always exceptions to the rule but overall Japan has kept sustained longevity with a high quality of life for many centuries. We could learn a lot from their eating habits.
I allow small portions of dairy in the form of lactose-free probiotic yogurt in the first week, as a transition food that helps with digestion and waste disposal. (Yes, I am talking about your poop shoot and dupesing.) I also find that people really enjoy their dairy, as meat, along with a whole host of other foods have been removed in the first week, the yogurt is a comfort with a tasty treat quality.
Just be ready because next week, it is a goner from the menu along with poultry-with the exception of small amounts of eggs.
